a story incomplete

This photo was taken inside the Balaclava Mill located in Renfrew County in Eastern Ontario. It is a wonderful old structure no longer in operation and in danger of falling into the river that once powered it. Inside there is evidence of old workplaces and of the workers that must have toiled long hours there.

the story incomplete

there was lots
that i found
long after you had moved on

but most pieces
were broken

and whatever use
or beauty they once held
remains forever as incomplete
as the untold story
you left behind

i like to think
that perhaps you found love

and that you looked back warmly
at the long hours you toiled

and remembered how you held
then shaped each piece so fondly

as you peered out the window
smiling at how the memory of her
filled your working days

The sacrifice

I took this photo at the war musuem in Ottawa. It is hard to visit a place like that and not wonder about the sacrifices that people make - both those that go off to war, and those that remain behind in hope. To a mother that has lost a child, what value is there in a memorial?  Hard thoughts to ponder, with no easy answers...

sacrifice

how much light
will need to shine
before we allow
women in all places
to bear sons and daughters

 instead of soldiers

 and sacrifices
too often glorified?

A crowd to hide in

I took this photo at Dick Bell Park in Ottawa, at the sailing club. Drawn by all the sail boats clustered together, and the various sparks of colour that jump out at you. I hope you like both the photo and the poem it inspired :)

A crowd to hide in

in the crowd
you choose to hide in

no matter how much
you think you shrink away

indistinguishable
from those around you

there will always be something
unique about you

ready to announce
to anyone who wants to see

and though you might
try to hide it

i can always find
that part of you

that shines for me

i hear the music still

This beautiful little country church is in Rockingham Ontario, in the Renfrew County area. It was a delight to come across it and to see that we were able to get inside. The church has not been used for worship for a number of years. A local group is trying to raise funds for maintenance and restoration. I hope that you like both the photo and the poem that accompanies it.

i hear the music still

i hear the music playing still
the voices raised in unison

hopes and dreams upon the wind
rise above the world we toil within

all the while the air does tremble
with expectation

hearts and spirits raised
in exultation

and yet we're left to endless ponder

where does the permanence of faith reside
why must our values so often wander
