A Cruel Destiny

This photo was taken while roaming one of the beaches in Australia. Of course, it could be on any beach, in any location by the sea.

 [ f/14, 1/800, 70mm, ISO 100 ]

as you look on

i reach my hand toward the earth
and cast your gaze downward
towards the mud and stones

long ago

some made houses from these
then filled them with warmth
and made them homes

yet we, you and i,

walk aimlessly over them
ignoring their pleas
that claw against our feet

and as you watch
i continue to stoop

pick up a handful

and toss them
into the waiting sea

i am too far
for their splash
to wash over me

we are meant to soar

While in Australia we came across a lookout point where a number of hang gliders were getting ready to take off into the welcoming breeze. I was fortunate to stand right at the cliff side and get some up close photos of the freedom and exhilaration they must have felt as they left the ground and sailed into the skies. The whole scene provides for a very appealing metaphor.

[ f/9, 1/160. 24mm, ISO 100 ]

of course we are meant to soar
how could i think otherwise

after all

why else do clouds
form such tantalizing shapes
their cotton textures
eagerly cradling
our skyward gaze

and the shifting blue hues
like the promise of a calm ocean
drawing us in

the gentlest of waves
tugging at our shores
rippling parts of us
back and forth

the sky's renewing ritual

why even at night
its diamond allure
draws mystery and wonder
in the dreams we keep

so then -

don't just stand
alone and tentative
at the cliff's edge

eyes skyward instead
there's lots to see

take my hand
let go the earth

and be

it's time to burn it

I came across this scene on a recent trip to Australia. Not having the type of winter that we in Canada experience, they have a year round growing season. Once a field of sugar cane is harvested, it is not unusual to see a farmer burning the filed of stalks that remain. This brings nutrients back into the fields and prepares them for planting another crop. It got me thinking about the need to burn those impediments we all have that get in the way of a happier, healthier life. Of preparing a fertile ground for new growth.

[f/2.8, 1/80, 70mm, ISO 2500 ]

it's time to burn it
burn it

don't hesitate

there is for you
a better fate

so

go ahead and
shed your baggage

throw away your doubt

silence the negative voices
and pick a more sunny route

face your failures
and all they scorched

be deliberate
as you light the torch

it's time to burn it
burn it

and contemplate
whatever holds you back

new resolve
you will not lack

it's time to burn it
burn it

nourish the ground
then plant again

it's time to burn it
burn it

look beyond
your mortal skin

it's time to burn it
burn it

let ashes soak
what pain your in

it's time to burn it
burn it

don't hesitate

there is for you
a better fate

Kristina & Graham Wedding Wish

I haven't posted in a while as I was in Australia over the past month. One of the reasons for the visit there was the wedding of my daughter Kristina to her fine young husband Graham. They had a wonderful beach wedding and it was a real pleasure meeting her Aussie family and friends.

kristina & graham

may your days be full of sunshine
to bring you warmth and comfort
when you need it

may there be abundant rainfall
to nourish and grow
the seeds of your love

may there be winds
both gentle and strong
to carry your hopes and your dreams

may there be richness
in the earth you stand on
to provide solid footing
for the journey you now undertake

and may there be fire
in both your hearts
to keep you pushing each other
to make each day better
than the one before

break through moment

No preamble this time. Just the photo and poem. Hope you like it.

[ f/8, 1/160, 62mm, ISO 100 ]

break through moment

strip away the layers
you will eventually find my heart

not because its buried deeper
since we've been apart

but because
this desperate effort
gives a place to start

renewal for each other
comfort to impart

if i choose to live alone

Photo taken at Achray camp ground in Algonquin Provincial Park. If I was to choose to live alone then the beauty of what surrounds me would be important but instead -

[ f/8, 1/125, 30mm, ISO 400 ]

the quiet

i choose to have you close
knowing that your hand in mine

is all i need to recompose
what beauty i would strive to find

no need
for the warming sun
to kiss my face

or the sound of gentle waves
to soothe my aches

no need for bird songs
to greet the morning light

nor flowers to bloom
and bring delight

for glorious
would every moment be

your hand in mine
your heart with me

where mirrors don't exist

I've always been attracted to old derelict buildings. As I grow older the attraction seems to be getting stronger. Maybe it's because my ageing body feels a certain empathy for how they have withstood time and are reluctantly surrendering to it. I started to write a poem about this old building's spirit and the memories it must hold of better days. Somehow, the focus changed. One of these days I might begin to feel like I am in control of my writing.

[ f/8, 1/100, 55mm, ISO 100 ]

reluctant surrender

at times i look within
where mirrors don't exist

climbing high atop a tree
seeing farther than i now see

then run upon a mountain trail
never thinking i could fail

yes
where mirrors don't exist
my dreams can still persist

writing furious through the night
best seller lists with no re-writes

finding treasures that most had missed
fame, wealth, and other myths

at times i look within
where mirrors don't exist

ignore my ageing body's list
the things that i cannot dismiss

and though relentless
time persists
i will find places
where mirrors don't exist

a spill of sunshine

Winter finally seems to be breaking. So, time for a little close up of yellow sunshine spilling out into the world.

[ f/8, 3 sec, 105mm, ISO 100 ]

a spill of sunshine

after the long winter
i finally saw
a spill of sunshine
come into my world

happily
it promises
to ease my daily whine

signalling a new norm
this radiant yellow warm

sigh...

yes
i know

you came to find another love verse

it behooves me
to speak both blunt and terse

because it's true
you made me happy

took away my winter blues

once you moved your shadow
and no longer blocked my views

parallel universes

I took this photo last summer in Baie-Ste-Paul, Quebec while on a little vacation and tour of the St Lawrence coast. I was struck by how much the reflection in the glass on the right side contrasted the view that you can see inside through the glass on the left.

[ f/10, 1/125. 56mm, ISO 800 ]

the view from here

i
have always wondered
whose view is most real

mine
on the side of the gloom
i sometimes feel

yours
on the side that's bright
always ready to heal

when
what brings me down
ripping my day apart

you
hold me close
and then gently chart

our
paths together
a new day's start

dream catcher

I like to think that the majority of people would share the feeling that I get when I marvel at the creative minds of inventors, builders, artists - any that have a grandiose dream and the ability to not only conceive such a scheme but then to go even further and make it into a reality.

[ f/8, 1/125, 26mm, ISO 100 ]

dream catcher

there was always fascination
with something I would miss

that you would bundle
into your chaotic dreaming

i could only marvel at
the attraction you felt
to being lost
in the maze of
your thoughts streaming

all the while
your emotions and grand ideas
barely balanced
jumping from beam to beam

when suddenly
life just burst from you
happier than most have seemed

it is perhaps
ideas or inventions turning real

where creative power
goes from the surreal

into embracing truth
and the beauty it does reveal
